Exploring STEM Subjects With Your Child

In school, your child will discover and study a number of subjects to help boost their academic strengths. Amongst these will lie Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. These are all part of core subjects that your child will need to pursue great careers in the future. Whilst education is conventionally expected to be delivered in the classroom, it is still important for you to work through these subjects with your child at home too. This is because STEM learning is well known for helping little ones develop an array of different and vital skills, such as problem-solving and investigative skills. Analysing these subjects further at home with your child will help them develop a greater interest in them and ensure that they get the most out of their school-based learning. Take part in fun experiments

Many parents may be under the impression that science is a difficult subject to explore at home. However, the majority of the tools and ingredients needed to carry out exciting experiments reside in none other than your kitchen cupboard. You may already be aware of the classic experiments such bicarbonate of soda with vinegar and water experiments using food colouring. There are also a few outdoor experiments such as mentos with coca cola and making crystals in the warm sun. Science experiments are easier to complete than thought and are a great way for children to be accustomed to STEM learning.  

Allow your child the chance to explore

Part of understanding and exploring STEM learning, is by allowing your child to have the freedom to roam the world and explore the opportunities it has to offer. Create a space at home where your child has the chance to take part in open conversations. Allow them to explore with different toys and crafts and work towards nurturing their curiosity. The good news is, there are multiple activities you can introduce to your child as STEM subjects can be studied in a variety of ways, ensuring your child stays engaged and finds a pocket in it that interests them.

As adults, you may be surprised as to how many things have come from STEM. From the development of the television to the advancements in smartphones and video games, STEM is quite literally all around us. The bike that your child rides daily also comes from this area of learning, which can be a fascinating fact for the both of you to know. Understanding which areas of life have been developed through STEM can be a great way for children to get grips with the concept of STEM subjects and in turn, help them develop their knowledge early on. 

Read books together

It is evident that reading is great for the development of knowledge. So why not kill two birds with one stone and combine it with the exploration of STEM subjects at home? There are many child friendly books out there that are designed to help the development of STEM learning through pictures and facts. These books begin from an introduction to Maths to the creation of the universe. You have the choice to choose from interactive picture books to ones full of pages of facts and information. Ask your child what interests them when it comes to STEM and take a trip to your local library to allow them to explore the never-ending rows of books. Make this an activity to explore together as it will show your child the importance of STEM learning and the drastic ways it can make a difference to their future.
